2008 SCODY AUSTRALIAN OPEN ROAD CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The prestigious Scody Australian Open Road Cycling Championships will be back in Ballarat this month.
Australia’s top cyclists will tackle the gruelling uphill Buninyong circuit, situated just minutes from the heart of Ballarat.
This year's Championships have been sanctioned as an Olympic qualifying event for the Beijing Olympics and have been extended to five days to comply with nomination criteria for the Australian Olympic Committee.
The 2008 Championships will be held from Wednesday 9 – Sunday 13 January with individual time trials on the first two days, followed by a rest day concluding with the spectacular road races on Saturday and Sunday.
The Scody Men’s Road Race will feature a host of professionals with impressive credentials including Graeme Brown, Allan Davis, Simon Gerrans, Matt Goss, Adam Hansen, Matt Hayman, Trent Lowe, Stuart O'Grady, Luke Roberts, Michael Rogers, Henk Vogels, Will Walker and Matt Wilson not to mention defending champion Darren Lapthorne.
The women's field for the Scody Australian Open Road Championships will also feature a wealth of talent including defending champion Katie Mactier, Natalie Bates, Sara Carrigan, Nikki Egyed, Rochelle Gilmore, Olivia Gollan, Lorian Graham, Helen Kelly, Jenny Macpherson, Alexis Rhodes, Emma Rickards, Oenone Wood and Kathy Watt.
The Buninyong circuit is regarded as the ultimate road race circuit for competitive road cyclists because of its mix of up-hill climbs, fast winding downhills, a fast flat sprint to the finish line and excellent spectator points close to the action.
A cycling preparation and trade display area will be set up adjacent to the start/finish line – a great spot to sit and enjoy a coffee and watch the riders warm up, as well as check out all the latest hi tech gear.
